It is proposed the ways of precise regulation of the porous structure of carbon adsorbents. The selection of different types of industrially produced porous polymers allows obtaining the activated carbon with certain variety of pores. The original methods of functional groups insertion into the surface layer of synthetic carbon adsorbents that exhibit high reactivity to biologically active substances, the activity regarding the formation of complexes with heavy metal ions and radionuclides as well as form the definite adsorption, catalytic and electrochemical properties of synthesized activated carbon are developed.
With the active participation of M. Kartel, it is developed and implemented technology of research–industrial and industrial production of micro- and mesoporous carbon sorbents based on the plant and synthetic raw materials, and carbon hemosorbents compatible with the human blood. M. Kartel performed a direct contribution to the establishment of research-industrial production of carbon enterosorbents «Еnterosorbent SКN» and «Carbovit»; proposed the technology of combined enterosorbents production such as «Ultrasorb» and «Carboxycam» for removal of radioisotopes of cesium, strontium, transuranium elements and heavy metal ions from human organism.
M. Kartel with his scientific achievements on the synthesis and application of sorbents of medical designation was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in Science and Technology in 1986.
Scientific researches towards the use of natural resources in production of high-quality types of activated carbon were recognized by the Prize of Presidents of National Academies of Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in 1998.
