Scientist in the field of physical chemistry,

Doctor of Sciences (Chemistry), Professor,

Academician of NAS of Ukraine (2012),

Laureate of State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR

in Science and Technology (1986)

Mykola Kartel was born on December 16, 1948 in Kyiv region in the family of serviceman. In 1966 he left the secondary school with the gold medal in Konotop of Sumy region. From 1966 to 1971 M. Kartel was the student at Chemistry Department of Shevchenko Kyiv State University where he received his diploma with honors and chemist qualification in radiation chemistry. He is working in National Academy of Science since 1971:

1971-1979 at L.V. Pysarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry;

1979-1991 at V.I. Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry;

1991-2007 at Institute for Sorption and Problems of Endoecology;

from 2008 at Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry.

M. Kartel obtained his PhD degree in 1975 and his doctoral degree (DSc) in 1989 (“Investigation of peculiarities of radiation-chemical synthesis in adsorbed state” and “Carbon hemosorbents based on synthetic active carbons”, respectively).

Mykola Kartel is an expert in the chemistry of high energy, physico-chemistry and technology of adsorbents, surface chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The investigation of the scientist is connected with the wide area of radiation chemistry of heterogeneous systems, synthesis and study of sorbents, creation and improvement of sorption technology and therapy means. He is author over of 600 scientific works, among them 3 monographs and more than 90 copyright certificates and patents. There are 11 candidates of chemical sciences (PhD) among his students.

The first scientific works of M. Kartel were devoted to the study of peculiarities of radiation-chemical effects in the interfacial area of “sorbent-gas” and “sorbent-liquid” systems. His results brought the essential contribution to the general theory of radiation-chemical transformation of substances in adsorbed state. In particular, he developed new concepts of the mechanism of sorbent surface participation in the destruction and reorganization of adsorbed molecules. It is shown the principle possibility of effective implementation of radiation-chemical synthesis onto oxide surface, essentially aminoacids, amines, peptides etc.

The most part of scientific investigations of M. Kartel is connected with carbon adsorbents, their practical application, first of all, to meet the challenges of medicine and environmental. It is proposed the ways of precise regulation of the porous structure of carbon adsorbents. The selection of different types of industrially produced porous polymers allows obtaining the activated carbon with certain variety of pores. The original methods of functional groups insertion into the surface layer of synthetic carbon adsorbents that exhibit high reactivity to biologically active substances, the activity regarding the formation of complexes with heavy metal ions and radionuclides as well as form the definite adsorption, catalytic and electrochemical properties of synthesized activated carbon are developed.

With the active participation of M. Kartel, it is developed and implemented technology of research–industrial and industrial production of micro- and mesoporous carbon sorbents based on the plant and synthetic raw materials, and carbon hemosorbents compatible with the human blood. M. Kartel performed a direct contribution to the establishment of research-industrial production of carbon enterosorbents «Еnterosorbent SКN» and «Carbovit»; proposed the technology of combined enterosorbents production such as «Ultrasorb» and «Carboxycam» for removal of radioisotopes of cesium, strontium, transuranium elements and heavy metal ions from human organism.

M. Kartel with his scientific achievements on the synthesis and application of sorbents of medical designation was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in Science and Technology in 1986.

Scientific researches towards the use of natural resources in production of high-quality types of activated carbon were recognized by the Prize of Presidents of National Academies of Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in 1998.

In 2000, M. Kartel was elected a corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine on the specialty "physical chemistry".

M. Kartel carried out great scientific and organizational activity as a member of the editorial boards of scientific Journals "Efferential Medicine" (Russia), "Chemistry and Technology of Water", "Ukrainian Chemical Journal", a head of Expert Council of Chemical Sciences of NAS of Ukraine (now Department of frames certification of Education and Science of Ukraine), a member of advisory board of the committee for awarding the prize of the President of Ukraine for young scientists, numerous Scientific Councils regarding sorbents and medicines including International Adsorption Society (IAS), European Carbon Association (ECA), Scientific Council of RAS on adsorption and chromatography. He actively took part in organization of Institute for Sorption and Problems of Endoecology in 1991 where hold the position of deputy director on scientific work for 17 years.

He actively engaged the training of highly qualified scientific staff and pedagogical work. For a long time, he lectured a special course "Chemistry and technology of adsorbents" at Chemical Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", a special course "Principles of adsorption" and the basic course "Physical chemistry" at the faculty of Natural Science of the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy".

M. Kartel was elected a director of Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine at the end of 2007. Heading the Institute and the department of physico-chemistry of nanoporous and nanosized carbon materials, he intensified the research in the field of physico-chemistry of surface phenomena involving carbon nanomaterials. He works in the areas of synthesis technology, purification and enrichment of carbon nanotubes, their certification and modification as well as the investigation of their physico-chemical and biomedical properties. With his participation, the experimental industrial equipment for obtaining carbon nanotubes and nanofibers is created, the production of enterosorbents using fumed silica is restored, a series of combined therapeutic compositions and herbal remedies are proposed as well as the production of dietary supplements "Balzasyl" is initiated.

The scientific journal "Chemistry, Physics and Technology of Surface” is founded by M. Kartel. He is also the executive editor of the collection of scientific papers "Surface", a chairman of the Scientific Council of NAS of Ukraine "Chemistry and Technology of Surface Modification," the president of the public organization "Association "Carbon" in Ukraine", an academician and member of the Bureau of the Presidium of the Academy of Technological Sciences of Ukraine.

In 2012 М. Каrtеl has been elected a full member of NAS of Ukraine on the specialty "Chemistry" and re-elected a director of Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine for the next five years.
